Not exactly current news but new to me hehe I noticed on my holiday that there is a surge K-Pop artist sweeping Asia’s Cd charts leaving only the most popular of J-Pop artists on the shelf (ie Utada Hikaru – the only one I could find in almost all the stores). I can pretty attribute the success to the Wonder Girls and this track – “Nobody” which has even made a mark in the U.S.
It is a very amusing video and catchy Pop song with a lively backing track and easy to remember chorus. A lot more hyper than I am use to but in the end I did enjoy it. I am getting hold of more of the Wonder Girls stuff to compare how this track stands with the rest of their music.
Yes, ‘Nobody’ has been a viral hit for 2 years now. It broke out of K-pop via WG’s performances on various Korean TV variety shows (the most-viewed clip already logging over 23 million hits), which in turn inspired thousands of international tributes & spoofs. Meanwhile, the catchy song (& its various remixes) triggered its own voluminous fan remakes & re-interpretations, with WG cashing in with English & Chinese song versions.
Pre-’Nobody’, their hit songs (in reverse order) were ‘So Hot’, ‘Tell Me’ & ‘Irony.’ The former pair were Internet sensations in their own right, albeit within the Kpop genre. ‘Tell Me’ had sparked a Korean national craze (the domestic equivalent of what would later happen globally with ‘Nobody’) & is credited as the advent of the ongoing girl-group popularity.
After a long wait, WG is releasing their new EP album worldwide on May 15, followed by a full LP album sometime in July.
