Today is the release of David Bowers “Astro Boy” or “Atom” as part of a the recent wave of 80’s nostalgia revivals. Now I was a fan of Astro Boy as a kid, along with Ulysses 31 and Battle of the Planets and as all nostalgic adults know, re-makes usually fail to deliver the child hood memories associated with the original product:
Article 1: Transformers 2 I am looking at you ^_-
Article 2: Speed Racer…why oh why
On the plus side, Astro Boy is fully animated movie allowing for more authentic design to be kept whilst modernising for today’s young generation. I will admit to a little apprehension as the movie bombed in Japan and naturally as a resultI am sceptical. Saying this the Japanese have been wrong before…Godzilla (1998)?!
Above is one of the trailers floating around, I actually quite enjoyed it despite some of the more tell-tale Americana signs of “You want a piece of me”, but for old time’s sake I am more than willing to give it a chance. One thing I will say though, is it sure does feel good seeing the little metal Pinocchio flying around after so long 🙂
